Growing ZZ Plant in Indian apartments
New growth on an established zz plant emerges as a tightly coiled, almost black spear pushing straight up out of the soil, which reads as a dead or diseased shoot to a lot of first-time owners but is completely normal, it unfurls into a fresh glossy stem within a couple of weeks. The rhizomes stored underground, which is what lets the plant skip watering for weeks, rot fast in a pot without real drainage or when watered on a fixed calendar rather than checked by hand first; always confirm the soil is actually dry before adding more. The leaves' glossy look comes from a natural waxy coating rather than an artificial shine, and wiping dust off with a plain damp cloth keeps that look intact far better than commercial leaf-shine products do, which can clog the leaf surface over time. The stems and leaves contain a sap that irritates skin on contact and is genuinely toxic if chewed, worth handling cuttings with care and keeping the plant out of reach of pets or small children rather than treating it as harmless because it looks so undemanding.
