Fertilizing indoor plants: a simple schedule for Indian apartments
A fresh bag of potting mix keeps a plant fed for about six weeks. After that, whatever it gets comes from you, and indoors, the rules are different from a balcony or a garden bed.

Most indoor plant owners either forget to feed anything at all, or feed on the same weekly habit they'd use outdoors and end up with crusty white soil and browning leaf tips instead. Indoor plants genuinely need less. No direct sun means slower photosynthesis, which means slower nutrient uptake, and no rain ever comes through to flush out whatever the roots don't use. Both of those change the schedule from what works on a balcony or in a garden bed.

Diluting further and feeding less often is the entire adjustment, and it's a cheap habit to get right once you know the reasoning behind it.
Why indoor plants need less than you'd think
- Less light, slower growth. A plant sitting a few metres from a window is pulling in a fraction of the light it would get outdoors, so it simply can't put nutrients to use as fast as a sun-grown plant does. The low-light plant list is mostly slow, forgiving growers for exactly this reason.
- No rain to flush the pot. Outdoors, a heavy monsoon shower occasionally washes excess salts straight through the drainage hole. Indoors, whatever you feed stays in that soil until you water it out on purpose.
- Hard tap water already adds minerals. Much of urban India runs on hard tap water, which deposits its own mineral load on top of anything you feed. Stack a full-strength outdoor dose on that and salt buildup shows up faster indoors than out.
A schedule that actually works
Skip the fixed weekly habit. Indoor plants do best on a schedule tied to the growing season and diluted well below what the fertiliser label suggests, since most labels are written for faster-growing outdoor plants.
- Growing months (roughly February to October): feed once every 4 to 6 weeks with a liquid fertiliser diluted to around a quarter of the label's strength. Fast growers like Pothos and Spider Plant can take the more frequent end of that range; slow ones like ZZ Plant and Snake Plant do fine at 6 weeks or even longer.
- Cooler, low-light months (November to January): cut back to once a month or stop feeding entirely. Growth slows indoors too, even with the AC keeping temperatures steady, because the shorter days mean less usable light coming through the window.
- Flowering exceptions: a Peace Lily or an indoor-flowering plant in bud can stay on the more frequent schedule a little longer than a purely foliage plant, as long as it's actively putting out new blooms.
- Just repotted? Hold off entirely for 4 to 6 weeks. Fresh potting mix already carries nutrients, and disturbed roots aren't ready to take up a feed straight away.
Matching the dose to the plant
Not every indoor plant on the same windowsill wants the same feed. Grouping plants roughly by type makes the schedule above easier to apply without overthinking each pot individually.
- Foliage plants (Pothos, Philodendron, Peace Lily): a balanced, nitrogen-leaning feed on the standard growing-season schedule keeps leaves full and green without pushing so much soft growth that stems flop.
- Slow, architectural plants (Snake Plant, ZZ Plant): these barely need feeding at all. Once every 6 to 8 weeks through the growing season is plenty, and skipping a cycle rarely shows.
- Succulents and cacti kept indoors: feed even less, roughly once every 6 to 8 weeks with a heavily diluted, low-nitrogen feed. Overfeeding these produces weak, stretched growth that doesn't hold the plant's natural shape.
- Flowering houseplants (Peace Lily in bud, African Violet): a phosphorus-leaning feed timed around active flowering supports blooms better than a general nitrogen-heavy one, which tends to favour leaves over flowers.
Signs you're overfeeding
Indoors, this is the far more common mistake.
- A white or grey crust on the soil surface or pot rim. This is salt buildup, often a combination of fertiliser residue and hard tap water minerals. Scrape the top layer off and flush the pot slowly with plain water until it runs freely from the drainage hole, then hold off feeding for a cycle.
- Brown, crispy leaf tips or edges on a plant that's otherwise being watered consistently. This usually reads as underwatering, but check the feeding schedule first; it's often fertiliser burn from too strong or too frequent a dose.
- Lots of soft new leaf growth with a leggy, weak habit. Too much nitrogen indoors, where there's already limited light to support that growth, produces stretched, floppy leaves rather than sturdy ones.
Signs you're underfeeding
- Older, lower leaves yellowing first while new growth still looks reasonably green. A classic nitrogen shortage pattern, and worth ruling out watering and light before assuming it's the soil.
- Stalled growth through spring and summer despite decent light and a sensible watering routine. A plant that hasn't been fed in over two months during its growing season is a reasonable first thing to fix.
When you're not sure which it is, underfeeding is the safer guess. It corrects within one or two feeds, while an overfed pot needs a proper flush and a pause before it recovers.
Applying a feed correctly indoors
Water the soil lightly before applying any liquid feed. Feeding into bone-dry soil concentrates the fertiliser right where the roots are and raises the risk of burn, the same finger-test-first habit that matters for watering an indoor plant correctly applies here too. Pour the diluted feed around the base of the plant rather than over the leaves, and skip it altogether if the soil is still visibly wet from the last watering. If you use hard tap water day to day, let it stand in an open container for 24 hours before mixing in a liquid feed; it won't remove hardness, but it cuts down on the chlorine and sediment layering on top of what you're already feeding the plant.
Organic and synthetic options in India
- Liquid seaweed concentrate is gentle enough for the more frequent end of the schedule without much risk of burning roots, and works well diluted into a regular watering can for foliage plants like Pothos or Spider Plant.
- Slow-release fertiliser sticks suit a windowsill full of pots better than measuring liquid feed each time. Push one into the soil per small to medium pot and it releases gradually over several weeks, a reasonable low-maintenance default for anyone managing more than a handful of plants.
- Balanced water-soluble NPK fertiliser (commonly sold around 19:19:19) is fast-acting and easy to dilute precisely to quarter strength, which makes it a sensible pick once you've got a couple of feeding cycles under your belt and want more control over the exact dose.
None of these need to be used alone. A lot of indoor plant owners run mostly on a gentle organic liquid feed and switch to a synthetic dose only when a plant is visibly lagging and needs a faster correction.
Getting the feeding schedule right matters less if the basics of light and water aren't sorted first. Fix overwatering before you touch a fertiliser bottle at all, since a struggling, overwatered plant won't take up nutrients properly no matter how carefully you dose it.
