Best potting mix ingredients for balcony plants in India
Cocopeat and vermicompost aren't rival products. They're the two halves of a DIY mix, each doing a job the other one can't.

Mixing your own potting mix sounds more complicated than it is, and it comes down to two ingredients doing most of the work: cocopeat (कोकोपीट) and vermicompost (वर्मीकम्पोस्ट / केंचुआ खाद). They aren't competing products where you pick one over the other. A good mix needs both, since each one solves a problem the other one leaves open, and buying them separately to mix yourself works out significantly cheaper per litre than a bagged mix while giving you control over the ratio for whatever you're actually growing.
Cocopeat: structure and moisture, no nutrition
Cocopeat is a byproduct of processing coconut husk, sold compressed into bricks that expand dramatically once soaked in water, usually for 15 to 20 minutes. It's the backbone of most Indian potting mixes for good reason: it holds moisture well without waterlogging the way garden soil does, and its naturally loose, fibrous texture keeps a mix from compacting into something dense and airless over time. What cocopeat doesn't provide is nutrition. It's essentially inert on that front, which means a mix built from cocopeat alone will hold water nicely and still starve a plant within weeks.
Vermicompost: the nutrient half of the mix
Vermicompost is compost produced by earthworms processing organic matter, and it's where a DIY mix actually gets its nutrients and its beneficial microbial life, both things cocopeat can't supply on its own. It's widely available at Indian nurseries and online, consistently good quality compared to some other compost sources, and it adds a small amount of structure to a mix on top of the nutrition, though not nearly as much as cocopeat contributes. Used alone, without cocopeat or a similar structural ingredient, vermicompost tends to compact and hold too much water, the same problem garden soil causes in a container.
Why they work as a pair, not alternatives
Put the two together and the weaknesses mostly cancel out. Cocopeat brings structure and moisture retention without waterlogging; vermicompost brings the nutrition and microbial life cocopeat lacks. Neither one is a substitute for the other in a mix, the way, say, two brands of the same fertilizer might be. A reasonable starting ratio for general balcony planting is roughly 40 percent cocopeat, 30 percent vermicompost or other compost, and the remaining 30 percent split between a drainage material like perlite or coarse sand and a small amount of garden soil for weight in larger pots. That ratio shifts depending on what you're growing: succulents and cacti want less vermicompost and more drainage material, while thirstier leafy ornamentals want the cocopeat share pushed higher for extra moisture retention.
The third piece: drainage material
Cocopeat and vermicompost are both fine-textured on their own, and a mix of just the two can still pack down over time without something coarser holding physical air pockets open. That's the job perlite, coarse sand, or grit does in the remaining share of the mix: pure drainage and aeration, with no nutrient value at all. It's a smaller share of the overall mix than either cocopeat or vermicompost, but skipping it is one of the more common reasons an otherwise reasonable cocopeat-and-vermicompost mix still ends up staying too wet for too long after watering.
Signs your mix ratio needs adjusting
- Water sits on the surface instead of soaking in: too little drainage material relative to cocopeat and vermicompost. Work in more perlite or coarse sand at the next repot.
- Soil dries out within a day, even for moisture-loving plants: not enough cocopeat relative to the rest of the mix. Push the cocopeat share up.
- The mix looks flat and compacted after a year or so: normal breakdown of the organic components. Refresh the top few centimetres with a fresh batch rather than waiting for a full repot.
Buying separately vs a bagged mix
A bagged potting mix from a nursery is fine for a handful of pots or if you'd rather skip the process, but it's worth checking what's actually in the bag. Some cheaper bagged mixes lean heavily on garden soil with only a token amount of compost, which won't drain or aerate the way a proper container mix should. Buying cocopeat bricks and vermicompost separately costs meaningfully less per litre once you're filling more than a few pots, and it means you can adjust the ratio per plant rather than using one generic mix for everything on the balcony. A compressed cocopeat block and a bag of vermicompost also store far better than a made-up mix does, since both stay usable for months in a dry spot, which makes buying a larger quantity upfront and mixing in batches as you actually need it a genuinely practical option rather than something that goes to waste.
