Grow lights for balconies with poor sun: do you actually need one?
Before spending money on a grow light, work out whether your balcony actually needs one, and if it does, what to buy and how to run it without wasting electricity.

A north-facing balcony boxed in by the next tower, a ground-floor flat that gets an hour of weak morning light, a spot that's fine in April and dead by December once the sun angle drops. Grow lights come up constantly in balcony gardening groups as the fix for all three, and sometimes they genuinely are. Just as often, someone buys one, clips it to a shelf, and finds their plants barely respond, because the light was the wrong type, too far away, or never really the problem in the first place. Worth working through properly before you spend the money.
Confirm the light problem first
Do a proper sunlight check before assuming a grow light is the answer. A surprising number of balconies that feel dim are getting 3-4 hours of bright, usable light, enough for most foliage plants without any supplemental lighting at all. A grow light is worth buying when the audit shows genuinely under 2-3 hours of usable light, not because a balcony merely feels shady from where you usually sit.
What "full spectrum" and PPFD actually mean
Grow light listings throw around terms that don't mean much without context. Full spectrum means the light covers the range of wavelengths plants use for photosynthesis, roughly the same blue-to-red range sunlight provides, rather than the narrow purplish-pink band older grow lights used. Almost every LED grow light sold today is full spectrum, so it's less a selling point now and more a baseline to expect.
PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) measures how much usable light actually lands on your plant, in micromoles per square metre per second. Low-light houseplants like pothos and ZZ plant do fine on roughly 100-300 µmol/m²/s. Leafy herbs and most flowering plants want closer to 200-400. Fruiting vegetables like tomatoes or chillies want considerably more, which is part of why grow lights work better as a supplement for foliage plants and herbs on a balcony than as a substitute for real sun if you're trying to fruit a tomato plant indoors. Few budget listings state PPFD honestly, so treat wattage and price as rough proxies rather than a real spec, and don't expect a ₹500 clip light to do the same job as a proper panel.
The three types worth considering
- Clip-on LED grow lights: cheap, small, good for one or two pots near a shelf or railing. Limited coverage, so fine for a single plant but not for lighting a whole corner of pots.
- Panel or bar lights: wider coverage, usually height-adjustable, better suited to a cluster of pots or a vertical planter setup. Cost more but do a genuinely better job across several plants at once.
- Bulb-style grow lights that screw into a standard fitting: the easiest option if you already have an outdoor-rated light fixture on the balcony, since there's nothing new to mount.
LED grow lights for plants on Amazon India span this whole range, from clip-on units under a thousand rupees to panel setups several times that. Match the type to how many pots you're actually trying to light rather than buying the biggest one available.
No socket near the balcony?
This trips up more Indian apartment setups than the light choice itself. Plenty of balconies were never wired with an outdoor socket, since the original layout only assumed a washing line or drying rack out there. Check that any extension cord or plug board reaching outdoors is rated for outdoor or damp use before running it through monsoon humidity, standard indoor-rated cords and boards degrade fast once they're exposed to moisture repeatedly, and a cheap board left out through a full monsoon is a genuine electrical risk, not just a shortened lifespan. Route the cord so it can't pool water at a low point, and unplug the whole setup rather than just switching off the light during a heavy storm. If running a cord out isn't practical at all, a battery or solar-panel grow light avoids the wiring question entirely, at the cost of somewhat less consistent output than a mains-powered one.
Positioning and run time
Distance matters more than most buyers expect. Most LED grow lights need to sit 15-30cm above the foliage to deliver useful intensity, closer for low-wattage clip lights, a bit further for a stronger panel. Too far and the light does almost nothing; too close and it can scorch leaf tips, especially on thinner-leaved plants. Check the specific product's recommended distance rather than guessing.
Run supplemental light for 10-14 hours a day for low-light foliage plants, closer to 14-16 for anything flowering or fruiting. Doing this by hand every day gets old fast, so a timer plug pays for itself within a month or two just in the mental effort saved, and it keeps the schedule consistent even on days you forget entirely.
What it actually costs to run
A typical 20-30W LED grow light running 12 hours a day works out to roughly 0.24-0.36 units of electricity daily. At Jaipur's residential tariff, that's well under ₹5 a day, so somewhere around ₹100-150 a month for one light running full-time. That's genuinely cheap for what it does, though it adds up if you're running several panels across a whole shaded corner. Worth checking your own tariff slab before assuming the number above applies exactly, since it climbs quickly once a household crosses into a higher slab.
Which plants actually benefit
Grow lights make the most difference for plants already tolerant of lower light but currently getting close to none: money plant, ZZ plant, peace lily, and most ferns respond well to a modest supplemental light rather than needing full sun equivalents. Sun-hungry flowering plants like hibiscus and marigold, or fruiting vegetables, generally aren't worth trying to grow entirely under a balcony grow light. The light output most home units provide doesn't come close to matching real outdoor sun for those, and you'll get better results moving those plants to whatever part of the balcony gets the most direct sun instead.
A monsoon and winter use case, not just permanent low light
Grow lights aren't only for balconies that are dim year-round. Through Jaipur's monsoon months, several consecutive overcast days can leave even a normally full-sun balcony short on usable light, and the sun's lower winter angle does something similar from November through January, when a balcony that's full sun by May quietly slides to partial sun for a few months. A small grow light kept on hand for exactly those stretches, rather than run constantly, is a genuinely useful middle ground for anyone whose balcony conditions swing a lot across the year. When it genuinely isn't worth buying
If the sunlight audit shows you're already getting 3+ hours of decent light, skip it and put the money toward better soil or a bigger pot instead, since that's more likely to be the actual bottleneck. Skip it too if you're trying to grow sun-loving vegetables on a genuinely shaded balcony. A grow light nudges a struggling low-light plant into healthier growth, it doesn't turn a dark corner into a vegetable patch. Buy one to keep plants that already suit your light level looking their best, not to force plants that were always the wrong choice for the space.
